GOTS: Global Organic Textile Standard

Updated: Nov 22, 2021

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is one of the leading worldwide standards that certifies the entire textile supply chain with independent certification and sets textile processing conditions for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria.

The purpose of this standard is to ensure the organic status of textile products in the process, starting from the harvest of the raw material, from the production with environmental and social responsibility to labeling, in order to provide sufficient confidence to the end consumer.

This standard covers the production, processing, packaging, labeling, trade and distribution of all textile products made of at least 70% certified organic natural fiber. End products may include, but are not limited to, fiber products, yarn, fabric, garments, fashion textile accessories (carried or worn), textile toys, home textiles, bedding and bedding products, as well as textile personal care products.

The standard has defined two separate labeling classes:

Label Class 1: Organic

The textile product bearing the expression "Organic" must contain at least 95% certified organic fiber.

Label Class 2: Made with %Organic

A product with "Made with % Organic" label class must contain at least 70% certified organic fiber. Mixing of conventional and organic fibers of the same type in the same product is prohibited. Conventional cotton, angora wool and virgin polyester are not allowed in the product composition.

The Global Organic Textile Standard International Working Group is comprised of four recognized member organizations. OTA (USA), IVN (Germany), Soil Association (UK) and JOCA (Japan). They contribute to GOTS together with international organizations and experts by using their experience in organic agriculture, environmental and socially responsible textile production.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the most important worldwide processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. In addition to setting very high criteria at all stages of the organic textile chain, compliance with social responsibility requirements is also requested.

Every product with the GOTS logo on its label means that it has been produced in accordance with international GOTS standards, from its raw material to its production, from the paint used to the slaughterhouse, and has passed all residue tests.

Thanks to the GOTS public database, users can search for information about organizations that have received GOTS certification in the supply chain, their location, production areas and products that have received GOTS certification, in line with their needs.
